5 levels of listening

Hearing: The lowest level of listening is sometimes called ignoring - you register the sound of the other person's voice, but not much else.

Pretend listening:
Your mind and attention are elsewhere, or you have that “I'd rather be somewhere else” look in your eyes.
Listening to interrupt: You are waiting for the speaker to pause so that you can get your chance to speak. You pay attention to the speaker as long as they talk about things you like or agree with.
Active listening: You are now listening and asking relevant questions to help you seek clarity about what is being said.


Empathic Listening: One main quality of empathic listening is giving support and encouragement rather than advice or criticism.
- Create a comfortable space for sharing: Giving the person a safe place for the discussion can make them more likely to confide in you.
- Acknowledge the other person's feelings: Let the other party know you are considering their feelings. Short phrases can indicate to the speaker that you’re aware of their emotions. You can say, “I hear what you are saying” or “I see that you feel strongly about this.”
- Pay attention to body language
- Let them guide the conversation: Remember that the point of these discussions is to let the other person and their feelings at their own pace. If there are breaks in the conversation, it is appropriate to remain silent until the other party starts speaking again.
- Wait to speak: Holding your opinions until the other person asks for them demonstrates that you value their input and respect their wishes. If, after sharing, the speaker says, “What do you think?” you may offer your opinion.
- Be encouraging: If and when the other person asks for your input, you can encourage them.
